The 5 Best Blue Light Filter Apps For Windows, Mac and Linux[^3^]

Studies have shown that exposure to bright blue light in the evening can affect your circadian rhythms and make it harder to fall asleep. Night Shift uses your computer's clock and geolocation to determine when it's sunset in your location. It then automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum. In the morning it returns the display to its regular settings.

From here you can create a custom Night Shift schedule, schedule Night Shift to turn on automatically from sunset to sunrise, or manually turn Night Shift off or on until sunrise or the scheduled time. You can also make the color temperature more or less warm when Night Shift is on. Warmer color temperatures show more yellow and less blue.

f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again.

Researchers are continually releasing studies on the potential harm of blue light. When you stare at a screen all day and into the evening, it can affect your sleep and disrupt your body's natural rhythms. For these reasons, blue light filters are incredibly important.

The reason blue light hurts is purely biological. Sleep is a part of the circadian rhythm, which is the cycle of biological processes that are determined in part by the levels of light and dark exposed to our bodies.

Microsoft added a blue light-limiting feature to Windows 10 in the Creators Update released in April 2017. Called Night Light, this feature shifts the Windows 10 display to show warmer colors that reduce the amount of emitted blue light. Turning the feature on is a simple process.

Windows 11 is Microsoft's latest operating system, and just like Windows 10, it has the same blue light filter. The feature is once again known as "Night Light," and you can turn it on in a few simple steps.

Step 3: Once night light is turned on in Windows 11, you can click on the result in Settings again. There will be toggles to adjust the strength of the feature. Drag the slider all the way up and Night Light will make your screen more yellow. Drag it down, and it'll be more of it's usual color.

For most of human history, our sleep has been guided by the sunlight. This has been disrupted by the rise of electric light and, more recently, by our constant usage of screens, which has led to a significant deterioration of our sleep quality.

Screens emit a blueish light, in terms of wavelength, similar to the sunlight at noon. Being exposed to this kind of light in the evening confuses our body and reduces the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for triggering sleep.

The good news is, you can start using blue light filter software to reduce eye strain and in some cases even improve your sleep. We put together a list of apps that you can use on your computer that will help you avoid the harmful effects of blue light.

Blue light is the reason your eyes start hurting after spending too long staring at your device screen. Continued exposure to blue light can suppress the production of melatonin or sleep-inducing hormone. This means that continued use of your devices keeps you alert and extends your day but also disrupts your natural sleep cycle. That could be causing your eyes to feel tired and overworked at the end of the day, as well as cause various sleep problems and even depression over time.

There are several apps available that can filter blue light on a MacBook. These apps usually allow you to adjust the intensity of the filter and set a schedule for when the filter should be on. Some popular options include f.lux and Night Shift.

f.lux is free and easy to use and is available for a variety of platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS. This makes it a convenient option for people who use multiple devices and need a consistent blue light filter solution across all of them.

If you have a newer MacBook running macOS Big Sur or later, you can use the built-in blue light filter by going to "System Preferences" > "Displays" > "Night Shift." From here, you can adjust the intensity of the filter and set a schedule for when it should be on.

A built in blue light filter is convenient, customisable and generally easy to use. However, they are generally not available on older device models. Although built-in blue light filters allow for some customization, they may not offer as much flexibility as other options, such as a blue light filter app like f.lux. Some people may find that a built-in blue light filter is not as effective at blocking blue light as other options, such as physical blue light filters or blue light blocking glasses.

Another option is to use a physical blue light filter, such as a screen protector to block blue light from reaching your eyes. These filters are typically made of a special film that absorbs or reflects blue light, and they can be easily attached to your MacBook's screen.

Using a screen protector can be a convenient and cost-effective way to reduce your exposure to blue light while using your MacBook. Check out our guide on 5 things to look out for when buying a computer screen protector.

Blue light blocking glasses are glasses that have a special coating or lens that absorbs or reflects blue light. They can be worn while using your MacBook to help reduce the amount of blue light that reaches your eyes.

Blue light blocking glasses can be very effective at reducing the amount of blue light that reaches your eyes. They can be particularly helpful for people who are sensitive to blue light or who need to reduce their blue light exposure as much as possible. However, depending on your needs, it may be inconvenient to have to wear blue light blocking glasses all the time or to switch between multiple pairs of glasses for different tasks.

There are several ways to block blue light on a laptop to suit every budget. Some options, such as blue light filter apps and built-in blue light filters, are relatively inexpensive and can be easily downloaded and installed on your laptop. Other options, such as physical blue light filters and blue light blocking glasses, may be more expensive but can be more effective at reducing blue light exposure. Ultimately, the best blue light filter solution for you will depend on your budget, your needs, and your personal preferences. It may be helpful to experiment with different options to find the one that works best for you. For those with a Mac computer, you have the option to turn blue light off, without installing any new apps or software. You just have to know where to go to turn on the feature, known as Night Shift. You can use Night Shift on most Mac models, as long as your computer is running MacOS Sierra 10.12.4 or later.

What these mac users need to do is to install the blue light filter app in their mac book. Once installed they can open the blue light filter app and they will then get the option to adjust the ratio of blue color in the light.

Ever worry about how your computer habits can affect your life? You should, because blue light has been shown to disrupt your sleep cycles, delaying the amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep. Please check out Ontario Association of Optometrist's video Sleepless Are Screens Keeping You Awake? to learn more. There are a few ways to reduce the amount of blue light exposure from using your devices. You can purchase glasses with an anti-reflective coating that filters the blue light, reducing the amount that reaches your eyes.

In addition to those blue light AR-coating glasses, you can do a few tricks on your PC/Mac, Android, or iOS devices that reduce the emission of blue light. Generally, these will remove blue light from showing on your screen, which leads to softer and yellower light that is easier on your eyes. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to set up a blue light filter for your device:

The best, and easiest solution is a program that you can install called f.lux . This program is great because it is so easy to set up. Based on your location that you enter, f.lux will automatically pick up on when the sun sets and rises to turn on or off the blue light filter.

It's seriously that simple. There are settings where you can adjust the colour of the filters but I don't recommend playing around with it. Also, you can disable the filter for one hour when you need to do colour-sensitive work, such as graphics design, or watching videos. You can access all of this in in the System Tray on Windows: 2ff7e9595c
